Don’t Shred-it – Edit! pt 2

Don’t Shred-it – Edit! pt 2

My book – The SparkGiver’s Experiment – took a decade of work!

In the beginning stages of the book, I tried to hire an editor. The first guy was such an asshole it actually broke me a little bit!

I paid $10 to have my then 600-page dumpster-fire of a book edited – so, I can’t blame him – but still; he was an asshole.

My next attempt was about as bad – that editor was nicer but she offered an edit that didn’t help at all!

Years later – my idiot-ass thought I’d learned so much that I was ready for the final stage again

I paid $300 to have one of the sloppiest edits I’ve ever seen!

My dumpster-fire of a book burned through five more editors before I realized the true value of a good editor.

The literary community was a total bag of dicks too!

People took it upon themselves to edit my life by attacking me personally after seeing the work a teenage girl wrote..

Years later, I recovered – only to get scammed by a total douche sandwich.

These are just a few examples of millions where knowledge makes a difference – which leads me to our lesson today.

Literary experts, Editors, and word enthusiasts have a list of buzzwords used for types of edits you can receive.

This is only a quick, dirty breakdown – for more details see the next post

Intense Edit, a.k.a. Developmental, Comprehensive & can make you cry. There are a lot of names for this but it is the first line of defense. This is figuratively a war zone edit as you will have to do battle with all your words!

Secondary Edit, a.k.a. Substantive – This is a lesser used term and is often confused with the developmental edit or even line edits.

Third-tier Edit – Often called line edit. Sometimes this is called Copy Edit – however – there are differences between the two.

Proofreading – an obvious end stage edit

Beta Reading / Manuscript Evaluation – this is less actual editing and more getting people to give you opinions about your work. DO NOT GET THIS EDIT FIRST – you will regret it!
